Seven rules
- Pick the counter by what you are countingJapanese counts things by kind and shape: long and thin (本), flat (枚), bound (冊), small animals (匹), machines (台), small objects (個), people (人), cupfuls (杯). The table below has the whole set.
- When unsure, つ — up to ten, and never for peopleThe native numbers ひとつ, ふたつ … とお count almost any thing, so they are the safe choice for objects you have no counter for. They stop at ten, and people always take 人.
- 1, 8 and 10 shrink before k, s and t — 6 only before kいち, はち and じゅう become いっ, はっ and じゅっ when the counter starts with a k, s or t sound: いっこ, はっさつ, じゅっさい. ろく shrinks to ろっ before a k (ろっこ, ろっかい) but not before an s: ろくさつ, ろくさい.
- H-counters turn into P after 1, 6, 8 and 10本 (ほん), 匹 (ひき), 杯 (はい) and 分 (ふん) start with h. After the shrunken いっ, ろっ, はっ, じゅっ the h becomes p: いっぽん, ろっぴき, はっぱい, じゅっぷん. After 2, 4, 5, 7 and 9 they keep the h.
- Three softens the sound — but not every counterAfter さん, 本, 匹 and 杯 turn voiced (さんぼん, さんびき, さんばい), and 分 turns to p (さんぷん).
- People are irregular at one, two and fourひとり and ふたり are their own words; from three it is ordinary 人 (さんにん). Four people is よにん — never よんにん.
- Dates and times have their own readingsDays of the month 1–10 use native readings: ついたち, ふつか, みっか, よっか, いつか, むいか, なのか, ようか, ここのか, とおか — and the 20th is はつか. On the clock, 4 is よじ, 7 is しちじ and 9 is くじ.
The chart, 1 to 10
Highlighted readings are the ones that change. Everything else is just the number plus the counter.
