Terms of service
Last updated 11 September 2026. Short, because a free study site does not need long ones — but these are the terms, and using the site means accepting them.
What this is
JLPT Open Catalogue is a free study resource for the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test, run by an individual, Kyle Pastor. It is not affiliated with the Japan Foundation or Japan Educational Exchanges and Services, who run the JLPT and own its name. Nothing here is an official past paper, and a score here predicts nothing about a score there.
Questions are drafted with AI assistance and then checked by human reviewers and by the community. That process catches a great deal and misses some. Treat every explanation as a good study aid written by fallible people, and if you find an error, the flag button exists for exactly that.
Using the site
You may use everything here for your own study, free of charge, with or without an account. What you may not do is scrape the catalogue at scale, republish it as your own, use automated tools to answer questions in bulk (it poisons the accuracy figures everyone else relies on), or interfere with the site or other people’s use of it.
Accounts
An account is optional. If you make one, give a real email address, keep your password to yourself, and accept that anything done from your account is treated as done by you. An account used to abuse the site or other people may be closed without notice.
Contributing
You can submit questions, suggest edits, vote, flag and comment. By doing so you confirm the material is your own work, and you give the site a permanent, worldwide, royalty-free licence to display it, edit it, combine it with other material and remove it. Contributions are public and are shown with the name you attach.
Do not submit real JLPT exam questions. Past papers are the copyright of the Japan Foundation and JEES. Anything recognisable as one will be removed, and repeat submissions will close the account.
Content and ownership
The questions, explanations, breakdowns, and the site itself are the work of its operator and contributors. You are welcome to use them to study; you are not granted any other licence to them by these terms.
Some example sentences come from openly licensed corpora and carry a badge naming the source and licence — that badge is the attribution the licence requires, and it stays with the sentence. The reading companions are word lists, not the books: they list vocabulary, readings and page numbers, and assume you own a copy of the work. Where a companion accompanies a freely licensed reader, its licence and author are credited on the deck page and its terms apply to that material.
“JLPT” is a trademark of its owners. Other names of works and characters that appear in study decks belong to their respective rights holders and are used only to identify what a deck accompanies.
No warranty, and the limit of liability
The site is provided as it is, free, without any warranty that it is accurate, complete or available. To the fullest extent the law allows, its operator is not liable for any loss arising from your use of it — including, to be plain about it, an exam result.
Privacy
What is collected and why is set out in the privacy policy, which is part of these terms.
Changes and contact
