Kanji are usually taught in frequency or school order. These are ranked by productivity — how many distinct compound words each one builds. Learn a character here and you are not one word closer to reading, but a hundred.

Reading them outright is a different matter — knowing only these 100 makes 8.2% of compounds fully readable, because most pair a common character with a rarer one. That gap is the point: these characters are the structure that the rest of the vocabulary is built on.

Built from the Tanaka Corpus index via Tatoeba (CC BY 2.0 FR) — 1,178,504 words of segmented Japanese, generated 2026-08-25. Tatoeba sentences are contributed by learners and teachers, so frequencies reflect textbook Japanese rather than a general corpus.
