〜かわりに
kawari ni · instead of ~; in exchange for ~
〜かわりに means instead of (父のかわりに私が行く) or in exchange for (手伝うかわりに、昼ご飯をおごって).
How to form it

How it is used
As in exchange: 「英語を教えるかわりに、日本語を教えてもらう」.
It also weighs a plus against a minus: 「この部屋は狭いかわりに、駅に近い」.
Examples

- 父のかわりに、私が会議に出ました。I attended the meeting in place of my father.
- パンのかわりに、ご飯を食べました。I had rice instead of bread.
- 宿題を手伝うかわりに、ジュースをおごってね。I'll help with your homework if you buy me a drink.
- この家は古いかわりに、家賃が安い。This house is old, but in exchange the rent's cheap.
