わたしの 住む まちでは、数年前から 「みどりの カーテン」という 取り組みが 行われて います。これは、夏に 家や 学校の まどの 外に ネットを はり、そこに つる性の 植物を そだてる ものです。植物が まどを おおうので、日光を さえぎり、部屋の 中が すずしく なります。
はじめて 聞いた とき、わたしは あまり 期待して いませんでした。カーテンの かわりに なる ほど、植物が 育つとは 思えなかったからです。しかし、実さいに やって みると、七月の おわりには まどが すっかり みどりに おおわれました。部屋の 温度は 二度ほど 下がり、エアコンを 使う 時間も みじかく なりました。
それだけでは ありません。育てた ゴーヤは 食べる ことも できました。近所の 人と 「今年は よく できましたね」と 話す きっかけにも なりました。小さな 取り組みですが、得る ものは 思って いたより 多かったと 感じて います。
