専門家が一般の人に説明するとき、しばしば二つの失敗が起こる。一つは、専門用語をそのまま使い、相手を置き去りにすること。もう一つは、わかりやすさを求めるあまり、単純化しすぎて本質をゆがめてしまうことだ。
前者は不親切だが、まだ罪は軽い。聞き手は「わからない」と自覚できるからだ。問題は後者である。きれいに整理された説明を聞くと、人は「理解した」と錯覚する。しかしそこでこぼれ落ちた例外や条件こそが、その分野の核心であることが少なくない。
良い説明とは、わかりやすさと正確さの間で揺れ続けるものだ。簡単に言いきれないことを、簡単に言いきらない誠実さ。それを持つ専門家こそ、本当に信頼できるのだと私は思う。
