むかしから「時間はお金だ」と言われる。時間をむだにせず、こうりつよくつかうことはたしかに大切だ。しかし、わたしは最近、それだけでは足りないと感じるようになった。友だちとあてもなく町を歩いたり、何もせずにそらをながめたりする時間は、こうりつから見ればむだかもしれない。だが、そういう時間こそ、心を休め、新しい考えをうむことがある。いそがしい毎日の中で、あえて「むだな時間」をもつこと。それが、かえって人生をゆたかにしてくれるのではないだろうか。
