子どものころ、わたしは祖母の家の庭にある大きな木が好きだった。夏はすずしいかげをつくり、秋には赤い実をつけた。ある年、台風でその木の太いえだが折れてしまった。わたしは泣いたが、祖母はしずかに言った。「木は折れたところから、また新しいえだをのばすのよ」と。実際、次の年、折れたあとから小さな芽がいくつも出てきた。人も同じだと、いまになって思う。つらい出来事で何かを失っても、そこから新しい何かが育つ。大切なのは、折れたことをなげくことではなく、またのびようとする力を信じることなのだ。
