「早く」という言葉が、これほど好まれる時代もめずらしい。料理は時短、勉強は効率、返事は即レス。たしかに、むだな時間をへらすことには意味がある。しかし、すべてを早くすませようとするうちに、わたしたちはあるものを見落としていないだろうか。たとえば、ゆっくり湯をわかし、茶をいれる。そのあいだの、何も起こらない数分間。そこには、心を落ちつかせ、頭を整理する静かなはたらきがある。早さはたしかに力だ。だが、あえて遅くすることでしか得られないものも、この世にはたしかに存在するのである。
