「わかる」という経験には、二つの段階がある。一つは、教わったことをそのまま受け取り、正しく再現できる段階。試験で点を取れるのは、多くの場合この段階だ。だが、それだけでは、知識は借り物のままである。もう一つの段階は、その知識を自分の経験や別の知識と結びつけ、自分の言葉で語り直せる段階だ。ここではじめて、知識は血のかよったものになる。教育の目的は、前者にとどまらせることではなく、後者へと橋をわたすことにあるはずだ。にもかかわらず、現実の多くの場面では、覚えたかどうかばかりが問われ、結びつける力は見すごされている。
