〜間・〜間に
aida, aida ni · while ~ (the whole time / at some point during)
〜間 means throughout a period (夏休みの間、ずっと), and 〜間に means at some point within it (留守の間に泥棒が入った).
How to form it

| V-ている + 間(に) | 寝ている間に |
How it is used
間 alone pairs with ongoing verbs: 「待っている間、本を読んでいた」 (the whole time).
間に pairs with one-off events: 「待っている間に、電話が来た」 (during the wait, once).
Examples

- 夏休みの間、ずっと田舎にいました。I was in the countryside all summer holiday.
- 私が寝ている間に、雪が降ったようです。It seems to have snowed while I was asleep.
- 母が買い物をしている間、車で待っていました。I waited in the car while my mother shopped.
- 留守の間に、荷物が届きました。A parcel came while I was out.
