敬語 (尊敬語・謙譲語)
keigo (sonkeigo, kenjougo) · honorific and humble language
Keigo has two sides: 尊敬語 raises the other person (いらっしゃる, 召し上がる) and 謙譲語 lowers yourself (参る, いただく).
How to form it
| お + stem + になる (honorific) | お帰りになる |
| お + stem + する (humble) | お持ちする |
| Special verbs | いる → いらっしゃる・おる |
How it is used
The common special verbs: 行く, 来る and いる → いらっしゃる (honorific), 参る and おる (humble); 食べる → 召し上がる, いただく; 言う → おっしゃる, 申す; 見る → ご覧になる, 拝見する.
Never use 尊敬語 about yourself: 「私がいらっしゃいます」 is wrong.
Examples
Tap a kanji for its reading.
- 先生は何時にいらっしゃいますか。What time will the teacher be coming?
- どうぞ召し上がってください。Please help yourself.
- 私は田中と申します。My name is Tanaka.
- 荷物をお持ちしましょうか。Shall I carry your bags for you?
Common mistake
- ✗ 私が先生のところにいらっしゃいます。✓ 私が先生のところに参ります。Honorific verbs are for other people; for yourself use the humble form.
