です

desu · to be (polite)

です is the polite "is, am, are" after nouns and adjectives. The past is でした and the negative ではありません or じゃないです.

How to form it

Noun + です学生です。
Noun + でした雨でした。
Noun + ではありません学生ではありません。

How it is used

After an い-adjective, です only adds politeness: 「高いです」. The past goes on the adjective, not on です: 「高かったです」, never 「高いでした」.

Casual speech uses だ, or nothing at all: 「学生だ」, 「きれい」.

Examples

Tap a kanji for its reading.

  • 私は会社員です。I'm an office worker.
  • 昨日は日曜日でした。Yesterday was Sunday.
  • これは私のかばんではありません。This is not my bag.
  • あの人は先生じゃないです。That person isn't a teacher.

Common mistake

  • ✗ 高いでした。✓ 高かったです。い-adjectives take the past themselves (〜かった) and keep です unchanged.
