へ

e (he) · to, toward (direction)

へ marks the direction you head in. It is written へ and read e, and with verbs of going it can usually swap with に.

How to form it

Place + へ + 行く・来る・帰る東京へ行きます。

How it is used

へ stresses the direction of the movement, に the destination itself. With 行く, 来る and 帰る both are fine.

Only へ can be followed by の: 「母への手紙」, a letter to my mother.

Examples

Tap a kanji for its reading.

  • 来週、京都へ行きます。I'm going to Kyoto next week.
  • 早く家へ帰りましょう。Let's head home early.
  • どこへ行きますか。Where are you going?
  • これは先生への手紙です。This is a letter to my teacher.

Common mistake

  • ✗ 駅え行きます。✓ 駅へ行きます。The particle is said e but written へ.
