と

to · and; with (a person)

と joins nouns in a complete list (A and B) and marks the person you do something with.

How to form it

Noun + と + Nounパンと卵
Person + と友達と行きます。

How it is used

と lists every item: 「パンと卵を買いました」 means you bought exactly those. For a list that is only examples, use や.

With a person, と means together with: 「友達と映画を見ました」. Add いっしょに to stress it.

Examples

Tap a kanji for its reading.

  • 犬と猫がいます。There is a dog and a cat.
  • 母と買い物に行きました。I went shopping with my mother.
  • 田中さんと話しました。I talked with Tanaka.
  • りんごとみかんをください。Apples and mandarins, please.

Common mistake

  • ✗ パンと食べて、学校に行きました。✓ パンを食べて、学校に行きました。と only joins nouns; to join actions, use the て-form.
