に

ni · at (a time), to (a place), in (where something is)

に marks a point: a clock time or date, a destination, the place where something exists, and the person you give to or meet.

How to form it

Time + に七時に起きます。
Place + に + 行く・来る・帰る学校に行きます。
Place + に + ある・いる部屋に猫がいます。

How it is used

Use に with clock times, dates and days of the week (七時に, 月曜日に), but not with relative words like 今日, 明日 or 毎朝.

に marks where something is; で marks where something happens. 「図書館に本があります」 but 「図書館で本を読みます」.

Examples

Tap a kanji for its reading.

  • 六時に起きます。I get up at six.
  • 来年、日本に行きます。I'm going to Japan next year.
  • 机の上に猫がいます。There's a cat on the desk.
  • 友達に手紙を書きました。I wrote a letter to a friend.

Common mistake

  • ✗ 明日に行きます。✓ 明日行きます。Relative time words like 今日, 明日 and 毎日 take no particle.
