も

mo · also, too; (with a negative) not … either

も means also or too. It replaces は, が and を, and with a question word and a negative it means none at all.

How to form it

Noun + も私も学生です。

How it is used

も takes the place of は, が and を: 「私も行きます」, never 「私はも」. Other particles stay in front of it: 「東京にも行きました」.

With a question word and a negative verb it means none: 「何も食べませんでした」 (I ate nothing), 「だれもいません」 (nobody is here).

Examples

Tap a kanji for its reading.

  • 私も学生です。I'm a student too.
  • 弟もテニスが好きです。My younger brother likes tennis too.
  • 昨日も雨でした。It rained yesterday too.
  • 何も買いませんでした。I didn't buy anything.

Common mistake

  • ✗ 私はも行きます。✓ 私も行きます。も replaces は rather than following it.
