の

no · 's, of (possession and description)

の links two nouns: the first owns, describes or narrows the second, as in 私の本 (my book) or 日本語の本 (a Japanese book).

How to form it

Noun + の + Noun先生の傘
Noun + の (second noun left out)これは私のです。

How it is used

The order is the reverse of English 'of': 「日本の車」 is a car of Japan, a Japanese car.

When the second noun is obvious it can go: 「この傘は田中さんのです」, this umbrella is Tanaka's.

Examples

Tap a kanji for its reading.

  • これは私の傘です。This is my umbrella.
  • 日本語の先生はやさしいです。Our Japanese teacher is kind.
  • 駅の前で会いましょう。Let's meet in front of the station.
