〜によって
ni yotte · by ~; depending on ~; by means of ~
〜によって has three jobs: the doer in a passive (by), variation (depending on) and means (through).
How to form it
| Doer + によって + passive | エジソンによって発明された |
| Noun + によって違う | 人によって違う |
| Means + によって | 話し合いによって |
How it is used
In the passive it names a creator or discoverer: 「この寺は三百年前に建てられた」 does not need it, but 「この曲はベートーベンによって作曲された」 does.
〜によっては means in some cases: 「場合によっては、中止になります」.
Examples

Practice: 2 JLPT questions using 〜によって
この建物は有名な建築家( )設計された。
This building was designed by a famous architect.
この 人は いま 何が いちばん むずかしいと 思って いますか。
When I started learning Japanese, what troubled me most was kanji. There are so many, and each has more than one reading. But after studying a while I realised there's something harder: changing how you speak depending on the person and the situation. Even the same 'thank you' is completely different to a friend and to a teacher.
Q: What does this person now find hardest? — Changing how you speak depending on the listener.
