〜たい

tai · want to ~

〜たい goes on the verb stem to say what you want to do: 食べたい, I want to eat. It conjugates like an い-adjective.

How to form it

Stem + たい食べたい
Stem + たくない行きたくない
Stem + たかった見たかった

How it is used

〜たい is for your own wishes. For someone else's, use 〜たがっている: 「妹は犬を飼いたがっています」.

The object can take を or が: 「水が飲みたい」 and 「水を飲みたい」 are both fine. To want a thing rather than an action, use ほしい.

Examples

Tap a kanji for its reading.

  • 日本へ行きたいです。I want to go to Japan.
  • 冷たい水が飲みたいです。I want to drink some cold water.
  • 今日はどこにも行きたくないです。I don't want to go anywhere today.
  • 子どものころ、先生になりたかったです。As a child I wanted to be a teacher.

Common mistake

  • ✗ 新しい車がたいです。✓ 新しい車がほしいです。〜たい follows a verb; to want a thing, use ほしい.
