を

o (wo) · direct object marker

を marks the direct object: the thing an action is done to. It is written を and read o.

How to form it

Noun + を + verbパンを食べます。

How it is used

を goes with action verbs like 食べる, 飲む, 読む, 見る and 買う. It also marks a space you move through or leave: 「公園を散歩します」, 「部屋を出ます」.

好き and ほしい are adjectives, not actions, so the thing liked or wanted takes が, not を.

Examples

Tap a kanji for its reading.

  • 毎朝コーヒーを飲みます。I drink coffee every morning.
  • 駅で切符を買いました。I bought a ticket at the station.
  • 公園を散歩しました。I took a walk in the park.
  • 七時に家を出ます。I leave home at seven.

Common mistake

  • ✗ 水をほしいです。✓ 水がほしいです。ほしい is an adjective, so the thing you want takes が.
