が

ga · subject marker

が marks the subject: who or what does the action or has the quality, especially when it is new information or the answer to a question.

How to form it

Noun + がだれが来ましたか。

How it is used

Question words like だれ and 何 take が, never は: 「だれが来ましたか。」 The answer keeps が: 「田中さんが来ました。」

Some words take が for the thing they are about: 好き, 嫌い, 上手, 分かる, ある, いる, ほしい. 「私は猫が好きです。」

Examples

Tap a kanji for its reading.

  • 雨が降っています。It's raining.
  • だれが窓を開けましたか。Who opened the window?
  • 机の上に本があります。There is a book on the desk.
  • 妹は歌が上手です。My younger sister is good at singing.

Common mistake

  • ✗ だれは来ましたか。✓ だれが来ましたか。A question word cannot be the topic, so it takes が.
