知る vs 分かる

shiru vs wakaru

知る is having information (knowing a fact or a person); 分かる is understanding or realising something. "I don't know" is 知りません for facts you never learned, 分かりません for things you can't work out.

知る vs 分かる: knowing versus understanding, why 知っています but 知りません, and which one to use when you do not know.

Side by side

知る (shiru)分かる (wakaru)
MeaningHave information, be acquaintedUnderstand, figure out
Positive知っている (always ている)分かる / 分かった
Negative知らない (not 知っていない)分からない
Objectを: 名前を知っているが: 意味が分かる
PeopleKnow someone: 田中さんを知っているUnderstand someone

The tense trap

知る means to come to know, so "I know" is 知っている. But the negative is plain 知らない: you never came to know it. 「知っていません」 is wrong.

Which "I don't know"?

知りません says the information never reached you; it can sound blunt, even "not my business". 分かりません says you can't work it out. Asked the way to the station, 「すみません、分かりません」 is the polite answer.
