を vs が

o vs ga

を marks the object of an action verb; が marks the object of state words like 好き, 分かる, できる, ほしい and potential verbs.

When the thing being liked, wanted or understood takes が instead of を, and why potential verbs switch from を to が.

Side by side

を (o)が (ga)
Goes withAction verbs: 食べる, 読む, 見るState words: 好き, 嫌い, 上手, 分かる, できる, ほしい
Potential verbsPossible in speechStandard: 漢字が読める
〜たい水を飲みたい水が飲みたい (both fine)
Intransitive pairsドアを開ける (someone opens it)ドアが開く (it opens)

Actions take を, states take が

好き, 嫌い, 上手 and ほしい are adjectives, and 分かる and できる describe states, so the thing they are about is marked with が: 「音楽が好きです」, 「日本語が分かります」, 「水がほしい」.

Potential verbs work the same way: 「漢字を読む」 (read kanji) becomes 「漢字が読める」 (can read kanji).

Transitive and intransitive verbs

Many verbs come in pairs: one takes を and has a doer (開ける, 閉める, 始める), the other takes が and just happens (開く, 閉まる, 始まる). 「私がドアを開けた」 but 「ドアが開いた」.
