Recently fewer students use paper dictionaries. That's because looking things up on a smartphone is faster. True, for speed it can't compete. But a paper dictionary, where the neighbouring words catch your eye, has a different kind of value.

A city library started a 'librarian for a day' scheme this year. Primary-school children experience library work for one day, during the summer holidays. The work includes returning books to the shelves and answering users' questions. Reshelving looks easy, but the books must go back in the correct number order, so it takes longer than expected. Children who took part said, 'I realised that books are easy to find because someone is organising them.' According to the library, teaching children about work is not the only aim.
